The United States Department of State updated its travel advisory for Thailand on 9 June 2025, placing the country in its safest category—Level 1—while cautioning against travel to certain southern provinces due to ongoing security concerns.
Thailand has been upgraded to a Level 1 travel advisory, classified as Exercise Normal Precautions, according to the latest guidance issued by the US State Department. This designation places Thailand alongside other low-risk destinations such as Japan, Canada, and Australia.
The advisory acknowledges Thailand’s strong public safety standards and infrastructure supporting tourism, a move expected to encourage greater international visitation. Popular destinations including Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Pattaya remain fully open to tourists and are considered safe for travel under current conditions.
Although the majority of the country is deemed secure, the advisory maintains a Level 2 warning—Increased Caution—for the provinces of Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, and Songkhla in the south. These areas have experienced periodic violence related to civil unrest, and the US government notes limited capacity to offer emergency assistance there.
Tourist safety measures such as the Tourist Assistance Centers, specialized tourist courts, and insurance schemes for visitors continue to bolster traveler confidence. These programs are part of broader efforts to enhance the country’s appeal to foreign visitors and support the tourism sector’s post-pandemic recovery.
Officials from the Thai government have welcomed the update, viewing it as a signal of renewed international confidence in Thailand’s position as a reliable and safe destination for travelers.
