Cha-Am Man’s Rampage Ends in Police Shooting

On the evening of April 4, at around 23:30, a distressing incident unfolded in Cha-Am, Phetchaburi Province, when a 34-year-old man, identified as Somchai, exhibited erratic behavior at the Cha-Am Hospital. Reports emerged of Somchai, wielding a gun and a 10-inch blade, causing havoc within the hospital premises. The police from Cha-Am station were notified and swiftly responded to the scene.

Upon their arrival, officers encountered Somchai who, in a frenzied state, brandished his knife and appeared ready to confront them. The situation escalated quickly, leading the police to fire three shots in self-defense, hitting Somchai in the arm, leg, and nearby areas, eventually subduing him for immediate medical treatment.

Further investigation at the scene revealed that Somchai possessed over 50 methamphetamine tablets, a 9mm handgun, a machete, and a replica gun. The deputy chief of the Phetchaburi Provincial Police later arrived to inspect the incident location and confirmed the findings.

Earlier that day, Somchai, reportedly under the influence, had driven his modified Toyota pickup to a local police checkpoint in Cha-Am, where he threw stones, damaging the facility’s glass doors and windows, before fleeing. His rampage continued onto the streets, where he collided with a police vehicle and then evaded capture, leading to a coordinated pursuit involving Cha-Am and Hua Hin police stations.

Somchai eventually reached Cha-Am Hospital to visit his wife, who had been hospitalized for over 20 days due to a kidney ailment. After a heated altercation, during which he claimed to possess methamphetamine and invited others to consume it, the situation escalated, resulting in the confrontation with the police.

Somchai is now receiving treatment at Cha-Am Hospital under strict police surveillance, pending further legal proceedings.
