Singkhorn Border in Prachuap re-opened to bustling trade

Prachuap opens the Singkhon checkpoint for the first time since COVID caused it’s closure. The total value of imported and exported items is at least ten million baht.

On August 2, it was observed that importers and exporters of Thai-Myanmar items were bringing cargo trucks to transfer goods via the Singkhorn checkpoint for the first time since being opened. Traffic was constant throughout the day at Singkhon Dan, Khlong Wan Subdistrict, Mueang District, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, this is following the province’s decision to open a checkpoint exclusively for cross-border transshipment.

On the Myanmar side, officials have permitted the reopening of the Mudong checkpoint in Tanaosri district, which lies opposite the Singkhorn checkpoint. Due to the political circumstances in Myanmar, the Myanmar government closed the Mu Dong checkpoint in early March 2022.

The majority of the items imported are frozen fish products from Myeik province, while the commodities exported to Myanmar are consumer goods. The value of imports and exports on the first day is estimated to be at least 10 million baht.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Supot Ketthong, Deputy Inspector General of Immigration in Prachuap Khiri Khan province, the Singkhon checkpoint currently suspends travel in and out of the border crossing of people and vehicles, but has eased operators’ ability to transport goods in order to drive the economy of border trade. From 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday through Saturday, goods can be imported and exported.

Public health officials and other organizations collaborate to monitor public health preventative measures at the Nai San freight handling area. In front of the Chao Por Hin Kong Shrine, while earlier in the day, government officials in Prachuap Khiri Khan and Myanmar authorities met to discuss ways to facilitate the checkpoint’s opening. Included in the request for cooperation is an explanation to help operators understand the need to properly adhere to governmental regulations to ensure that the operation runs smoothly.

Mrs. Nilwan Ruangsawat, Secretary-General of the Chamber of Commerce Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, stated that Prachuap Province has previously closed the Singkhon checkpoint for a long period owing to the pandemic situation of COVID-19.

The province had made amendments on opening the Singkhon checkpoint for cargo loading and unloading at the start of the year. However, due to the political circumstances in Myanmar, the Myanmar government announced the closing of the Mudong checkpoint,  making imports impossible.

Mrs. Nilwan Ruangsawat went on to say, “As a result, the Singkhon and Mudong checkpoints must be reopened. We are certain that it will benefit the economy of cross-border commerce. In the future, I would like government agencies to explore opening checks for people and cars to enter and depart for the benefit of both nations’ tourism economies.”
