Mangosteen Prices Surge Following Thai Government Intervention

A coordinated market stabilization campaign by Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce has led to a significant increase in mangosteen prices across southern provinces, with premium fruit reaching over 100 baht per kilogram by July 20. The price rebound follows intervention measures launched on July 4, in response to early-season price pressure reported by farmers in Nakhon Si Thammarat.

The government’s approach included encouraging large-scale purchases by major retailers and corporations, as well as the launch of the Thailand Fruit Festival 2025 to stimulate consumer demand. These efforts were aimed at clearing supply backlogs and boosting prices across different fruit grades.

According to the Ministry, as of July 20, mixed-grade mangosteens sold outside of auction groups were fetching 30–40 baht per kilogram, while higher-quality fruit reached 70–100 baht. Prices within organized auction systems ranged from 41–48 baht/kg for mixed grades and 113–120 baht/kg for top-grade fruit. The ministry noted that around 80% of the projected 109,697-ton harvest has already been brought to market.

To maintain price stability for the remainder of the season, authorities have called on corporations and banks—including Krungthai Bank, Siam Commercial Bank, and the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives—to continue procuring fruit under their corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs. Major retailers such as Big C, Makro, Lotus’s, and Tops Central have also supported the effort through direct sourcing and in-store campaigns.

Looking ahead, the Ministry plans to reinforce export channels, expand domestic retail access, and implement national-level promotional campaigns to sustain demand. Retailers like The Mall, 7-Eleven, GO Wholesale, and Super Cheap, alongside local agricultural cooperatives, are expected to play a key role in ensuring continued market flow.

Deputy Commerce Minister Suchart Chomklin and Commerce Minister Jatuporn Buruspat were both present during the launch of the initiative in Nakhon Si Thammarat, where they met with farmers and oversaw the rollout of support measures.
