Thai Government Condemns Cambodia Over Border Landmines

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Thai government formally condemned Cambodia’s alleged use of anti-personnel landmines in a disputed border area, calling it a violation of international law, following an incident in which three Thai soldiers were injured. The remarks came during separate press briefings held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Royal Thai Army on Sunday, July 20, 2025.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that on July 16, three Thai soldiers from Infantry Company 6021 stepped on landmines while on routine patrol near Chong Bok in Ubon Ratchathani Province, an area claimed to be within Thai territory. Nikorndej Balankura, spokesperson for the ministry and Director-General of the Department of Information, said investigations had determined that the explosives were anti-personnel mines not deployed or stockpiled by Thailand, and were “recently laid.”

“The use of such landmines violates the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention and the United Nations Charter, particularly in terms of sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Nikorndej said, adding that Thailand intends to pursue action under the Convention while seeking a bilateral resolution with Cambodia.

The Thai government has also called for Cambodia’s cooperation in joint demining operations, referencing commitments made by the Prime Ministers of both countries.

In a statement aimed at the Thai public, Nikorndej appealed for calm, emphasizing the need to avoid inflammatory online discussions that could exacerbate the situation. “National unity is most important at this time. We ask for trust in the authorities managing the issue,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Royal Thai Army rejected Cambodian accusations that Thai forces had encroached upon Cambodian territory or planted the explosives themselves. Army spokesperson Lt. Gen. Winthai Suvaree described these claims as “distorted facts” and warned that spreading such narratives could harm diplomatic relations.

He reaffirmed that Thai forces continue to act in accordance with international humanitarian law and urged Cambodia to cease issuing statements that might cause confusion or international concern.

While tensions remain elevated, both Thailand and Cambodia have expressed a preference for resolving the issue through diplomatic means.
