The Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB), also known as “Cyber Cop Thailand,” has issued a warning to the public regarding a new SMS text scam targeting commercial bank customers. According to the CCIB, scammers are using the same name and text field as commercial banks to make their messages appear authentic. Victims are deceived into downloading a mobile control application by clicking on a link in the message.
Once the victims click on the link provided, they are directed to a Line account that resembles a real bank’s account. The scammers then request personal information before tricking the victims into downloading a mobile control app. The CCIB officials have revealed that over 3,700 complaints related to mobile control app scams have been filed through the police website between March 1 of last year and April 30 this year. The total damages are estimated to be over 233 million baht.
The CCIB has assured the public that banks never send SMS messages with links to follow. Any message that includes such a link should be considered fraudulent. The public is encouraged to be cautious of SMS messages and links and to contact organizations directly to confirm their authenticity. It is essential to remain vigilant and take the necessary precautions to protect oneself from cybercrime.
