Prachuap Governor Launches “Tanawsri-Kirikhun Durian Season” at Khlong Loi, Bang Saphan

On 13 June 2025, the governor of Prachuap Khiri Khan officially inaugurated the Tanawsri Durian Season at Khlong Loi in Bang Saphan district, aiming to promote the region’s signature durians and increase awareness of their geographic indication (GI) registration.

The event took place at the large-scale durian farming group office in Khlong Loi, where the season’s first durian was symbolically harvested to mark the beginning of the 2025 harvest season. Attendees sampled the Khlong Loi durian, known for its unique taste and quality, as part of a broader campaign to promote local agricultural identity and encourage direct sales to domestic consumers.

The Tanawsri durians, including varieties from various districts such as Pa La-U (Hua Hin), Khao Chao (Pran Buri), Pa Mak (Sam Roi Yot), Hat Kham (Kui Buri), Khao Lan (Thap Sakae), Khlong Loi (Bang Saphan), and Chaiyarat (Bang Saphan Noi), are being featured at multiple events scheduled across the province in June and July. These include the “Sufficiency Economy Festival: Father’s Home” and “Market Village Durian PA-LA-U” in Hua Hin from 18–22 June, the second Pran Buri Agriculture Fair from 27–29 June, the Hat Kham Tourism Festival from 11–22 July, and the 12th Pa La-U Fruit and Local Products Fair from 14–20 July.

In 2025, Prachuap Khiri Khan province has 17,759 rai (approx. 7,000 acres) of durian plantations, with 11,563 rai currently yielding crops. The province expects to produce about 9,250 tonnes of durian this season, with Bang Saphan, Hua Hin, Bang Saphan Noi, and Pran Buri being the top-producing districts. There are 2,329 registered durian farmers in the area.

Amid increasing scrutiny of chemical residues in durians destined for export—particularly BY2 found on the fruit’s outer shell—the provincial agricultural office is encouraging farmers to pivot towards premium durians for domestic consumption, thereby reducing reliance on international markets.

To facilitate access, a QR code-based pre-order system has been introduced for the Tanawsri Khlong Loi durian (Monthong variety) at 199 baht per kilogram. Reservations are open in four rounds: 6–8 June, 13–15 June, 27–29 June, and 4 July.

The event was attended by local administrative leaders, agricultural officials, and representatives from various organizations, including the Tanawsri farming community and GI stakeholders.
