A recent wildlife monitoring project conducted in Kaeng Krachan National Park has confirmed the ecological richness of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The June 2025 survey results, released by the park’s administration, show the continued presence of a wide range of wildlife species in the protected forest area, reinforcing its global environmental significance.
The study is part of an ongoing collaboration between Kaeng Krachan National Park and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Thailand. As part of the project, motion-activated camera traps were installed throughout the forest to monitor animal movements and gather data on local biodiversity. These images serve not only as scientific documentation but also as a tool for deterring illegal hunting.
Among the species captured on camera were wild elephants, leopards, Malayan tapirs, and Asian small-clawed otters—species that are increasingly difficult to observe in the wild due to habitat loss and human interference. Most notably, the survey documented the presence of the cotton pygmy goose (Nettapus coromandelianus) for the first time in the park. This marks a significant discovery, highlighting the ecological depth of the area.
Kaeng Krachan National Park spans a crucial watershed region for the Phetchaburi and Pranburi rivers. It is recognized for its biological diversity and its role in supporting endangered wildlife, contributing to its World Heritage status conferred by UNESCO.
The survey’s success is attributed to the collective efforts of conservation officials, park rangers, and researchers, whose work continues to safeguard this vital ecosystem. Local authorities have also acknowledged the role of responsible tourism in preserving the natural integrity of the forest.
