BANG SAPHAN, THAILAND — In response to a surge in agricultural thefts, particularly involving coconuts and other valuable crops, authorities in Bang Saphan District initiated a coordinated campaign on May 26, 2025, aimed at curbing illegal trade and protecting local farmers. The initiative includes outreach to local agricultural buyers and stricter enforcement measures.
Acting under orders from District Chief Sutin Prasertsak, Deputy District Chief for Security Natthaphong Krainara led a team comprising officers from the Bang Saphan Police Station and local officials to visit several villages in Tambon Kamnoet Nopkhun. The group focused on raising awareness among operators of longan, coconut, oil palm, and rubber purchasing shops in villages 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. Shop owners were informed that they are prohibited from buying products acquired through theft and were provided with certification signage to display their compliance.
Authorities also began registering longan produce purchases to establish a structured data collection system. The campaign has received cooperative responses from local business operators, and district officials plan to expand the initiative to every village within the subdistrict.
Officials emphasized that community vigilance is essential. Residents who witness thefts are urged to report incidents immediately rather than remain passive. Police action is only possible when a formal complaint is made, and even minor offenses can lead to a criminal record. Repeat offenses may result in more severe penalties. Reports can be filed 24 hours a day through the national emergency hotline (191) or directly with the district office.
Several key measures were announced to deter further incidents:
- Agricultural buyers must install CCTV, record seller details, and visibly post notices against purchasing stolen goods.
- Government agencies will form patrol units, identify at-risk groups, and enforce the law rigorously.
- Local administrative bodies are tasked with supporting surveillance efforts and inspecting businesses for compliance.
- Communities are encouraged to coordinate through local networks, including messaging apps such as LINE, to report and share information on thefts.
In attendance during the operation were Ms. Supawadi Somsong and Mr. Surasak Ronkaew, both subdistrict headmen, as well as village headmen and their assistants who supported the district’s enforcement and public awareness efforts.
