Human error caused Rama II beam collapse

A government inquiry has determined that human error led to the fatal collapse of a concrete beam during construction on the Dao Khanong–Bangkok western outer ring road along Rama II Road. The incident occurred on 15 March 2025 in Bangkok’s Chom Thong district, resulting in five fatalities and injuring 22 others.

According to a source from the Ministry of Transport, a fact-finding committee led by Associate Professor Anek Siripanich, an advisor to the Engineering Institute of Thailand, found that construction missteps were responsible for the collapse. The committee confirmed that the structural design itself was not at fault.

The infrastructure project, which is part of the city’s expanding western outer ring road, is being carried out by a joint venture between Italian-Thai Development (ITD) and Vichitbhan Construction (VCB). The total value of the project is estimated at around seven billion baht.

The Expressway and Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (ERTA) is currently reviewing the committee’s findings. Once finalized, the report will be forwarded to Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit and subsequently to police authorities for further investigation into potential negligence or liability.

The findings are also expected to form the basis of compensation claims against both the contractor and the consulting firm involved. Following the incident, the Dao Khanong toll plaza was closed from 15 to 20 March, causing an estimated revenue loss of approximately one million baht per day.

Officials involved in the review included ERTA representatives and members of the engineering and transport oversight bodies.
