Traditional drum parade marks Songkran at Khao Nang Phanthurat

On April 15, 2025, a traditional long drum parade took place in Cha-am District, Phetchaburi Province, as part of efforts to preserve a cultural ritual that has been passed down for over a century. The event, held during the Thai New Year festival of Songkran, aimed to strengthen community identity and promote cultural tourism through a collaborative initiative between the Khao Nang Phanthurat Forest Park and local residents of Ban Khok Sethi village.

The activity, titled Soft Power Phanthurat – Khok Sethi, featured a ceremonial procession to pay respects at sacred community sites, notably the revered Mae Phanthurat Shrine. Beginning at the village pavilion, the parade followed a route passing through historical and religious landmarks, including the ancient Dvaravati-era Khok Sethi site and the tranquil Wat Pa Wisutthikun, before entering the forest park’s natural trail. The procession concluded at the shrine, located 150 meters into the park’s conservation area.

Throughout the route, local residents dressed in colorful floral shirts accompanied the rhythm of the long drums with traditional dance, highlighting a strong sense of unity and cultural pride. The event seamlessly combined spiritual practice, cultural heritage, and nature conservation.

The tradition of paying homage to sacred sites during Songkran has been practiced in Ban Khok Sethi for more than 100 years, according to Wimal Madee, head of Village No. 6. He noted that the ceremony is held to seek blessings for health, prosperity, and success in life and business. The celebration not only marked the Thai New Year but also aimed to promote local soft power and attract interest in cultural tourism, contributing to community development and local economic growth.

The event was supported under the policies of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, led by Minister Chalermchai Sri-on and the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation. Local park authorities and conservation agencies provided coordination and support, along with community leaders and cultural advocates.
