Fishing Tournament in Bang Saphan Promotes Eco-Tourism and Marine Conservation

On March 23, 2025, Sahaviriya Steel Group, in collaboration with the Bang Saphan Fisheries and Tourism Community Enterprise, hosted the third annual “Thai Fishing Bang Saphan” tournament at Ao Thian Beach, Mae Ramphueng Subdistrict, Bang Saphan District, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. The event aimed to promote eco-tourism, boost the local economy, and encourage marine conservation.

The competition, held over two days from March 22 to 23, featured kayak and general fishing categories. Participants competed in various fish species, including king mackerel, grouper, snapper, and barracuda. Special awards were given for the heaviest and longest fish, as well as for the widest-bodied squid. Winners received trophies and prizes such as apparel, special gifts, and camping chairs sponsored by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Prachuap Khiri Khan Office.

A key highlight of the event was the “Artificial Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) Deployment” initiative, organized by the Bang Saphan fishing boat group. This activity aimed to restore the marine ecosystem by providing artificial habitats to support fish populations.

In addition to the fishing competition, the event featured a marketplace selling fresh seafood, local delicacies, and regional products, along with live music and stage performances. These attractions contributed to the lively atmosphere and supported the local economy.

The “Thai Fishing Bang Saphan” tournament has become more than just a competitive event; it serves as a platform that balances sports, tourism, and conservation. The collaboration among various sectors reflects a shared commitment to sustainable marine resource management and positions Bang Saphan as a key destination for eco-friendly tourism.

Among those attending the event were Sinathorn O-aiam, Deputy Governor of Prachuap Khiri Khan, who presented awards to the winners and acknowledged the contributions of participants and sponsors. The event also welcomed representatives from the Bang Saphan District Office, Sahaviriya Steel Group executives, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, and local agencies, along with a large number of enthusiastic anglers.
