A 3.6 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Gulf of Thailand early this morning, approximately 49 kilometers off the coast of Chumphon province, according to the Earthquake Surveillance Division of the Meteorological Department. The tremor was detected at 5:26 a.m. at a depth of about one kilometer below the seabed.
Officials attribute the earthquake to movement along the Ranong fault, a geological feature that extends from the Andaman Sea through the provinces of Ranong, Chumphon, Prachuap Khiri Khan, and Phang-nga.
Authorities have reported no significant damage, with only mild tremors felt in some areas. Kittisak Boriboonkaset, head of Chumphon’s public disaster prevention and mitigation office, confirmed that there have been no reports of structural impact or injuries.
