Bangkok’s Traffic Congestion Reduced by 25%

Bangkok has achieved a significant reduction in traffic congestion, with travel times decreasing by 25% in some of the city’s busiest areas over the past two years.

This improvement follows the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s (BMA) implementation of the Area Traffic Control (ATC) system, which adjusts traffic signal timings based on real-time vehicle volume. Since its introduction in May 2023, the ATC system has enhanced vehicle flow by 10% during peak hours and 30% during off-peak times.

In addition to the ATC system, the BMA has installed artificial intelligence-equipped closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in numerous locations to detect traffic violations. Road infrastructure improvements have also been made to enhance driver comfort and safety.

Looking ahead, the BMA plans to expand these measures to over 70 additional congested areas throughout the year, aiming for further improvements in traffic flow. The administration is also actively encouraging residents to utilize non-motorized and public transport options, promoting sustainable travel solutions to alleviate road traffic pressures.

These initiatives are part of a broader effort to modernize Bangkok’s traffic management system, incorporating advanced technologies to create a more efficient and sustainable urban environment.
