On January 1, 2024, Prachuap Khiri Khan will host the annual “Khuen Khao Hom Phra” festival at Khao Chong Krachok, marking its 19th consecutive year. This event, aimed at promoting tourism and preserving cultural heritage, has been a significant fixture on the province’s tourism calendar since 2005.
The festival will feature a series of activities, beginning with a merit-making ceremony at the foot of Khao Chong Krachok, where participants will offer alms to monks to welcome the New Year. Adventurous visitors can climb the 396-step staircase to the summit, retracing the footsteps of King Rama IX, who placed a sacred relic within the golden pagoda in 1958. Successful climbers will receive certificates and commemorative items.
A highlight of the event is the ceremonial draping of the golden pagoda with a sacred yellow cloth, accompanied by a traditional procession. Visitors can also enjoy panoramic views of the Three Bays—Ao Prachuap, Ao Noi, and Ao Manao—from the summit, an experience often lauded for its breathtaking sunrise views.
Khao Chong Krachok, a limestone hill rising approximately 245 meters, is celebrated for its natural “mirror hole” at the peak, a distinctive geological feature. The site holds cultural and spiritual significance, making it a focal point for both locals and tourists.
This initiative aims to boost tourism, preserve traditions, and stimulate the local economy while fostering unity between residents and visitors. Officials have expressed hopes that the event will offer a meaningful and auspicious start to the New Year for all attendees.
For those interested, activities will take place at Khao Chong Krachok, in front of Wat Thammikaram Worawihan, a royal temple. Preparatory rituals, including blessings on a sacred cloth, will occur from December 18 to 27, 2023, at Prachuap City Pillar Shrine.
