Hua Hin Lessons for Safer Bridge Projects

Bangkok, December 4, 2024 – The Department of Highways (DOH) has teamed up with the Engineering Institute of Thailand (EIT) to address the recent collapse of a bridge on Rama II Road. The collaboration aims to restore traffic promptly while improving construction safety standards to prevent future incidents.

The incident, which occurred on December 3, involved the failure of a launching gantry and bridge segments on Highway 35. At 6:57 p.m., engineers successfully removed Segment No. 1 from the damaged gantry without further complications. Efforts continue today to dismantle Segments No. 2 and No. 3 under the supervision of a specialized engineering team.

The DOH and EIT are working closely to remove the damaged steel structures and bridge components. This includes detailed drone inspections of the site, collaborative planning with subcommittees specializing in structural and crane engineering, and coordinated efforts to install cranes safely. Every step is monitored to prioritize safety and avoid repeat incidents.

DOH Director-General Apirat Chaiwongnoi emphasized the agency’s commitment to expediting the repairs and restoring normal traffic flow on Rama II Road. “Our goal is to alleviate public inconvenience and minimize the impact on commuters as quickly as possible,” he stated.
