Kelantan Proposes Border Wall with Thailand to Curb Crime and Flooding

The Malaysian state of Kelantan has proposed a 100-kilometer wall along its border with Thailand’s Narathiwat province, aimed at reducing cross-border crime, smuggling, and managing flood risks. The proposal, announced by Deputy Chief Minister Mohamed Fadzli Hassan, seeks approval from Malaysia’s federal government, marking a potential shift in Kelantan’s approach to border security and environmental control.

Hassan shared with the Bernama news agency that the wall would address challenges in monitoring the expansive Malaysia-Thailand border, which security forces find difficult to patrol consistently. “Given the vastness of the Malaysia-Thailand border, relying solely on security forces is challenging,” he noted. “We are taking this proposal to the federal level.”

The initiative follows recent recommendations from Kelantan’s state police chief and is intended to reinforce security efforts along the Kolok River, which separates Kelantan and Narathiwat. Flood control is also a priority, as the river’s fluctuations contribute to seasonal flooding issues. The river-based border poses unique enforcement difficulties, further complicated by the presence of private landowners along key stretches of the boundary.

Currently, other border provinces such as Satun, Songkhla, and Yala have some existing barriers, with walls and fences established through a mix of bilateral and unilateral efforts to enhance border integrity.

Approval of Kelantan’s proposal would underscore Malaysia’s commitment to regional security and environmental management. However, moving forward, local authorities may face challenges negotiating with private landowners and addressing cross-border implications to ensure successful implementation.
