Hua Hin Launches “Dementia Cafe” Project

On July 8, 2024, Mr. Nopporn Wuttikul, the Mayor of Hua Hin, presided over the launch of the “Dementia Cafe” project, designed to strengthen bonds within families and support elderly individuals facing dementia. Held at Baan Talay Dao Resort in Hua Hin, the event drew participation from local dignitaries including Mr. Attichat Chaisri, Deputy Mayor; Mr. Chit Supasi, a member of the Municipal Council; Ms. Rosasuk Lueanson, a seasoned nurse from the Provincial Medical Division; Mr. Teeraphan Jatuphon, overseeing Public Health and Environment; and Mr. Udom Srimaha Chota, the Hotel Manager.

The initiative spanned three days, concluding on July 10, 2024, and featured workshops facilitated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Natthaphatchara Sorabon from Thammasat University. Inspired by the concept of Dementia Cafes popularized in Japan, these gatherings transformed traditional cafe spaces into supportive environments for dialogue, knowledge sharing, and emotional connection. This approach aims not only to engage elderly individuals living with dementia in meaningful social interactions but also to equip caregivers with practical insights and stress management techniques.

The “Dementia Cafe” initiative exemplifies a proactive approach by the Hua Hin Municipal Government in addressing the needs of its aging population. By adapting proven international models to local contexts, the program not only enhances the quality of life for dementia patients but also fosters a more informed and supportive community environment. It underscores a commitment to holistic care and community engagement, highlighting the importance of social inclusion and support for elderly citizens and their families.
