Phuket Airport to Expand Capacity with New International Terminal
Phuket, June 4 – Phuket International Airport is gearing up for a major expansion to increase its capacity from 12.5 million to 18 million passengers annually. This significant development will be facilitated by the construction of a new international terminal, with the design phase currently underway and expected to be completed this year.
The need for expansion is underscored by the airport’s current traffic, which is nearly matching pre-COVID-19 levels. In May, Phuket Airport handled approximately 16,000 domestic passengers per day, equating to 90% of its pre-pandemic domestic traffic. International traffic has already surpassed previous levels, with an average of 22,000 arrivals and departures daily, a 7% increase compared to 2019.
Monchai Tanod, Phuket Airport Director, anticipates that passenger numbers this year will reach or even exceed the 2019 total of 18 million. The new terminal, which is expected to commence construction in 2026 and be completed within three years, is designed to enhance the airport’s capacity and efficiency in handling international flights.
In addition to the new international terminal, there are plans for a dedicated terminal for seaplanes. This is part of a broader vision to expand and modernize the airport’s facilities, aiming to accommodate the growing number of tourists and improve the overall travel experience at one of Thailand’s busiest airports.
The project has attracted attention from various stakeholders, including government officials and local business leaders, who recognize its potential to significantly impact the region’s tourism and economy.
