Initiating “HUA HIN U-Turn Recycle” for Sustainable Economic Revitalization

On February 19, 2024, Mr. Noppaporn Wutthikul, the Mayor of Hua Hin, spearheaded the commencement of the “HUA HIN U-Turn Recycle” initiative at the Circular Economy Learning Center, Municipality of Hua Hin. This event, orchestrated by the local administration in collaboration with the Network of Natural Resources and Environment Conservation Volunteers, aims to propel the community towards active waste management and contribute to the development of a circular economy.

The kick-off event, attended by officials such as Mr. Nittas Janthong, Director of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, featured prominent figures including Ms. Pailin Kongpan, Deputy Mayor, Mr. Udom Duangkae, Chairman of the Municipal Council, Mr. Thongchai Petchsangkham, Vice Chairman of the Municipal Council, the Municipal Council Secretary, and other municipal dignitaries. Also present were Mr. Jirawat Phramanee, the Municipal Clerk, Admiral Likit Nounin, Deputy Municipal Clerk, representatives from the Social Welfare Department, and executives from local schools, including the School Municipal Council and students, actively participating.

The primary objective of the “HUA HIN U-Turn Recycle” initiative, jointly organized by the sub-district municipalities of Hua Hin and Nong Kae, is to encourage community-driven waste separation and management. Moreover, it advocates for the practice of upcycling, transforming waste materials into valuable products for commercial purposes. The initiative aligns with the principles of a circular economy, striving to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and foster sustainable regional development.

An essential highlight of the event was the demonstration of plastic upcycling by professors from Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi and representatives from Ariyasut Intertrade Co., Ltd. Following the event, a vibrant parade, featuring the HUA HIN U-Turn Recycle float, traversed the community, amplifying awareness. The float, adorned with recycled materials, underscored the initiative’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

The term “Network of Natural Resources and Environment Conservation Volunteers” refers to a dedicated group acting as environmental stewards within their communities, similar to personnel within the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. They play a crucial role in coordinating, publicizing, and executing environmental tasks within their local context. In Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, the network comprises 2,352 members, with 382 actively participating in the Hua Hin district.

The commencement of the “HUA HIN U-Turn Recycle” initiative signals a noteworthy step towards sustainable waste management and the establishment of a circular economy, emphasizing the community’s pivotal role in addressing local environmental challenges.
