In a celebration of tradition and camaraderie, the Khao Tao Reservoir Project in Khao Tao Village, Hua Hin District, Prachuap Province, recently hosted the closing ceremony of the “Long Boat Battle for the Water Masters Year 16.” The event, held under the royal initiative, saw the participation of key figures including Mr. Atichat Chaisri, Deputy Mayor of Hua Hin City, and Mr. Amorn Patthong, a member of the Municipality Council. The ceremony marked the culmination of a vibrant long boat racing competition, vying for the prestigious Royal Cup for the year 2023.
Initiated by the Hua Hin Municipality, the “Traditional Long Boat Race Project 2023” unfolded at Khao Tao Reservoir on November 18-19, 2023. Collaborating with the Thailand Public Broadcasting Service (ThaiPBS) and the Health Promotion Foundation, the municipality organized the event as part of the program “Long Boat Battle for the King of the Water, Year 16.” The competition featured four categories, showcasing the prowess of skilled rowers.
In the long boat category with 55 rowers, the “Chao Mae Pradu Thong Boat” from the Anti-Aircraft and Coast Guard Division, Sattahip District, Chonburi Province, claimed victory and was honored with the Royal Trophy from His Majesty King Vajiralongkorn. The 40-man boat category (metal long boat) witnessed the “Chao Pu Leklai Boat” securing the royal trophy from Her Majesty the Queen. The 32-oarsmen category (Khon Ching Thong long boat) saw the “Si Hanuman Boat” emerging victorious, while the 30-oarsmen category (Naga-headed long boat) recognized the excellence of both types of “Thepchularat Boats,” receiving royal trophies from Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.
Following the thrilling races, Mr. Atichat Chaisri, Deputy Mayor of Hua Hin City, presented trophies to the Governor of Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, acknowledging the 1st runners-up in each category. The Mayor of Hua Hin was also honored with a trophy to award the 2nd and 3rd runners-up. The Hua Hin Municipality, committed to preserving cultural heritage, declared its intent to organize the long boat race as an annual tradition, fostering a sense of community and preserving the region’s rich cultural legacy.
