On September 15th, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin expressed his stance against the recreational use of cannabis, while affirming his administration’s commitment to maintaining policies that support its medical applications.
Thailand made history last year by becoming the first Southeast Asian nation to decriminalize cannabis. However, the government swiftly introduced a series of regulations within a week of this milestone to ensure responsible usage, especially among children.
Currently, the Pheu Thai party leads an 11-party coalition government, which assumed power in August. The largest party within this coalition, the Bhumjaithai party, played a pivotal role in the previous administration’s efforts to decriminalize cannabis. Both parties have consistently emphasized their endorsement of cannabis solely for medical purposes.
The cannabis industry in Thailand is poised to reach a substantial valuation of up to US$1.2 billion in the coming years, with numerous businesses sprouting up in popular tourist destinations.
Prime Minister Thavisin emphasized, “Addressing the issue of drug abuse is a pressing concern for our nation, one that has not received the attention it deserves.” He further emphasized that “the utilization of cannabis should strictly adhere to medical purposes.”
