Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin Puts Focus on Revitalizing Thailand’s Northeastern Economy

In a strategic move to invigorate the economy of Thailand’s northeastern region, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has unveiled plans for his inaugural mobile cabinet meeting scheduled to take place in Nong Bua Lamphu province this November.

The Prime Minister’s decision comes on the heels of an extensive fact-finding tour across the northeastern region, during which he identified and assessed critical challenges faced by the local populace. These included issues such as stagnant incomes, the scourge of drug-related problems, and the profound repercussions of drought conditions gripping the region.

During his visit to Nong Khai, Prime Minister Srettha underscored the untapped economic potential of provinces like Khon Kaen and Udon Thani. He pointed out their geographical advantage of proximity to Laos and highlighted the tourism opportunities generated by the presence of well-equipped airports. Additionally, he discussed the pivotal second phase of the dual-track train project connecting Khon Kaen to Nong Khai, emphasizing its strategic significance and the promising prospects it presents.

The government has also laid out a clear roadmap for collaborative efforts with various agencies aimed at upgrading local facilities for the export industry. These concerted actions aim to ensure the region’s competitiveness vis-à-vis neighboring countries such as Laos and China.

Meanwhile, the President of the Chamber of Commerce and prominent business sector representatives in Nong Khai are steadfastly pushing for the construction of a bridge linking Nong Khai and Vientiane, with ambitious plans to complete this monumental infrastructure project by 2029. Their visionary proposal also encompasses the establishment of a dedicated business center tailored to the needs of traders.

In a collective endeavor to bolster the region’s labor sector, this influential group is rallying behind Khon Kaen University’s ambitious proposal to establish a high-speed railway engineering school. This initiative is geared towards enhancing the skills and expertise of the local workforce while actively advocating for pro-Nong Khai economic policies.

Prime Minister Srettha has reaffirmed his commitment to the region, expressing his intention to return for follow-up assessments on the progress of vital infrastructure projects in the near future. As Thailand’s leader steers his administration towards revitalizing the northeastern economy, the nation watches with anticipation, hopeful for a brighter future for the region and its residents.
