Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has turned his attention toward revitalizing the economy in Thailand’s northeastern region, with the forthcoming inaugural mobile cabinet meeting scheduled to convene in Nong Bua Lamphu province. This decision comes in the wake of the Prime Minister’s recent fact-finding mission to the northeast, where he identified a series of critical issues facing the region.
Among the challenges identified during his inspection tour were concerns related to low incomes, drug-related problems, and the adverse effects of drought on the local population. These pressing issues have spurred the government into action, with plans for a comprehensive approach to address them.
During his visit to Nong Khai, Prime Minister Srettha underscored the untapped potential for economic growth in provinces such as Khon Kaen and Udon Thani. He cited their strategic proximity to Laos, coupled with the presence of airports that could bolster the tourism sector. Additionally, he shed light on the significance and profitability of the second phase of the dual-track train project, which extends from Khon Kaen to Nong Khai.
In a bid to fortify the region’s economy, the government has committed to collaborating with various agencies to enhance facilities supporting the local export industry. This endeavor aims to maintain the competitiveness of Thailand’s northeastern region vis-à-vis neighboring countries like Laos and China.
Simultaneously, the President of the Chamber of Commerce and representatives from the business sector in Nong Khai are fervently pursuing an ambitious project—a bridge linking Nong Khai to Vientiane, which they aim to complete by 2029. Their vision also includes the establishment of a dedicated business center to facilitate trade activities.
Furthermore, this group has urged unwavering support for Khon Kaen University’s proposal to establish a high-speed railway engineering school. This educational initiative aims to enhance the labor sector within the northeastern region and champion policies favoring Nong Khai’s economic growth.
Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has affirmed his commitment to the northeastern region by expressing his intention to revisit the area in the near future. His visit will serve as an important follow-up to gauge the progress of infrastructure projects initiated to boost the region’s economic prospects.
