Thai Labor Minister Holds Talks with Hong Kong Employers’ Federation to Promote Cooperation and Import Thai Semi-Skilled Labor

On April 21st, 2023, Thai Labor Minister Suchart Chomklin met with representatives from the Hong Kong Employers’ Federation to discuss promoting cooperation between the two countries and importing Thai “semi-skilled” labor to fulfill Hong Kong’s labor needs.

During the talks, the Minister emphasized Hong Kong’s demand for labor in various positions, such as caretakers for the elderly, mechanics, and engineers. He expressed his optimism that both nations would work together to simplify the process of importing labor to meet the labor market’s demand. The Minister highlighted the great opportunity that this presents for Thai workers to secure employment in Hong Kong and contribute to the country’s development while enhancing their competitiveness.

This collaborative effort between Thailand and Hong Kong extends beyond labor. Hong Kong investors have announced plans to expand their production bases to Thailand, including KGK (Thailand) Co., Ltd., which is one of the top 5 diamond manufacturers that export worldwide. KGK has decided to make Thailand its production base for export, and this project is a collaboration in various sectors to uplift Thailand’s human resources to international standards.

The Ministry of Labor has also welcomed representatives from the Hong Kong Employers’ Federation to observe training courses aimed at upgrading the skills of Thai workers in various fields, including Thai food preparation, single-dish meals, and hot stone massage. This is a clear indication of the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring the continuous development of Thai workers’ skills.

The Ministry of Labor has set a target of sending no fewer than 10,000 Thai workers to Hong Kong each year, which is ten times the number of workers sent in previous years. Thai workers’ income levels in Hong Kong are considered high, with welding being one of the professions that can earn more than 200,000 baht per month. This presents a significant opportunity for Thai workers to improve their livelihoods and contribute to the growth and development of both nations.
