Over 100 immigration police officials have been suspected of fraudulently providing visas to foreign tourists, according to Deputy National Police Chief Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn.
110 policemen have been accused with misconduct in office and taking bribes, according to Pol Gen Surachate. This week, the case is scheduled to be assigned to public prosecutors.
The inquiry, which is a follow-up to an earlier examination into the conduct of a few immigration police personnel, involves immigration officers and local administration officials.
The officials were reportedly involved in the issuance of visas to businessman Chaiyanat Kornchayanant and other Chinese nationals associated with “grey” firms in Thailand.
Chaiyanat and many of his colleagues are presently in detention on a variety of allegations, including drugs trafficking, money laundering, and participation in organized transnational crime.
