The Prime Minister Urges Caution Before the New Year

Due to Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendiradebyavati’s hospitalization for a heart issue, the government has encouraged the public to exercise caution during New Year’s celebrations out of respect.

Although there are no particular restrictions governing New Year’s Eve activities this next weekend, Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha advised event organizers to be cautious and respectful.

On December 19, the Secretary-General of the Office of the Judiciary, Thirasak Ngoeiwichit, issued orders for agencies under the office to forego New Year’s celebrations and instead hold merit-making ceremonies to wish the princess a speedy recovery. Since then, several organizations have demanded that New Year’s activities be held at their discretion or canceled.

In an effort to support the local economy, the Pattaya municipality has also canceled its New Year’s Eve fireworks. However, music and market stalls will be permitted to function.

Sanga Ruangwattanakul, president of the Khao San Road Business Association, declared last week that due of respect for the princess, this year’s New Year celebrations will be cut back. However, tourists are still welcome to dine in restaurants and take pictures with the holiday decorations that local businesses have prepared.
