Phuket ready to fine people for not wearing masks

” Violators will be arrested and prosecuted … [and] the Phuket health office has been assigned to file complaints. We must set an example ” – Phuket governor

Local authorities have said they will take legal action against tourists who do not wear masks in public places. Phuket’s immigration officer, Pol Col Thanet Sukchai, said yesterday that tourists were not applying the preventive measures against Covid-19, as they were not wearing masks in public places. Thus, the local authorities have decided to enforce more strictly the requirement set by the local contagious diseases committee.

Narong Woonciew, Phuket’s governor, had earlier asked the consuls of 22 nations to inform their citizens of the requirement to wear face masks in Phuket, said Pol Col Thanet. As the rules are not respected, sanctions will be put in place to “set an example.” To do this, the governor will form a task force to enforce the rules in the city. Local police, especially in the Soi Bangla and Patong areas, will take the lead and inspect key areas.

Since 7 January, the governor has required people to wear a mask when going out, unless they are eating, drinking, or doing physical activity. Non-compliance with this order is punishable by a fine of up to 20,000 baht under the Communicable Diseases Act, and a fine of up to 40,000 baht and/or two years’ imprisonment under the Public Administration in Emergency Situations Decree imposed to control Covid-19.
