Exponential increase of Omicron cases in Thailand after the end of year holidays

Since this Tuesday, the Thai Ministry of Public Health has detected nearly 2,062 cases of the Omicron variant in the country. Director of the Department of Medical Sciences of the Ministry of Health, Supakit Sirilak, pointed out that the number of omicron cases in the country is growing exponentially, from about 700 before the Christmas and New Year vacations to more than 2,500 cases at present.

According to the official, almost half of the omicron variant infections (1,105 cases) are due to the presence of foreigners, and the other part is due to local transmissions. Nevertheless, the Delta variant remains the main variant in Thailand, accounting for 70 to 80 percent of new infections.

Mr. Supakit has warned that cases of Omicron variants will continue to increase rapidly as more testing and close surveillance are needed to control potential transmission.

Currently, six big provinces – Bangkok, Kalasin, Roi Et, Phuket, Chonburi, and Samut Prakan – have reported about 70 percent of the Omicron cases detected in the country.

As of Monday, Thailand has vaccinated more than half of its population, or so 64%, with two doses. While about 10% had already received a booster shot, according to government data.
